Watch Secure Passport

The Watch Secure Passport, or WSP is a dynamic certification system which securely keeps authenticity certificates, service records and other documents related to a watch using a NFC ID embedded in the watch and an online secure encrypted storage.

Documents attached to the watch are:

  • the authenticity certificate of the watch
  • the identity of the current owner with proof of purchase
  • the log of all authorized services made on the watch

The documents are accessible by simply scanning the watch NFC tag with a smartphone. Some documents are accessible only by the owner, the reseller or the manufacturer.

Elements of the WSP

The watch

The watch itself is equipped with a NFC chip containing the unique identifier code of the watch. This code is created and written at the time of manufacture.

The QR-code based owner certificate

The owner of the watch receives a credit-card sized certificate with a printed a QR-code. Scanning this QR-code grants access the system as the watch owner:

  • access to the watch detailed data
  • edition of owner personal information
  • ownership transfer to another person

The official reseller license

The official reseller licence grants access to the reseller prerogatives:

  • grant ownership of a new watch when it is sold
  • access the watch service log
  • add a new entry to the watch service log

The manufacturer main management account

Tha manufacturer account provide the following functionalities:

  • register/generate the watch unique ID
  • grant the reseller/repairer rights
  • generate the owner certificates
  • access watch service information

How does WSP is used in practice?

Initial sale of a watch

During the initial sale of a watch, the authorized reseller proceeds with the following steps:

  • authenticates himself as a reseller
  • reads the watch NFC
  • activate the WSP system for the watch for the owner
  • fills the personal information of the buyer or let the buyer do it directly

Subsequent ownership transfer

To make an ownership transfer, the steps are the following:

  • the seller clears all his personal information and secure pin by using the "release ownership" feature of the app
  • the buyer scans the owner certificate, this generates a new secure pin which the buyer must write down on the designed space on the certificate

Ownership transfer requires only the owner certificate and secure pin alongside the watch. This allows transfer if the previous owner is not available but all original documents are.

Return to the owner in case of loss

If the watch retrieved after it is lost or stolen, it can be scanned with any smartphone to enter in contact with the registered owner. The owner can also activate a "lost mode" which shares contact information with him. The "lost mode" also reliably mark a watch as lost.

Servicing log

By reading the watch NFC when authenticated, an official reseller can access the whatch's service log.

After the service is done, the service provide can add a new entry to the log with every useful information like the list operations done on the watch, replaced parts... Extended warranty can also be managed this way.

How WSP protects the manufacturer and legitimate owners?

Forgery

In order to check the authenticity of the watch anybody in possession of the watch can read the watch NFC ID to:

  • verify that the watch is registered
  • if the watch is registered, the person gets access to an high-resolution image of the watch to assess that the watch is the real one and not a forgery, by comparing the unique features of the watch such as small scratches etc.
  • check the validity of an owner code in a dedicated interface

In addition to this check, a person with the owner certificate sets a pin, which should be writter on the certificate to monitor access, so that a single owner code cannot be given or used by several users.

Theft

The owner app allows to signal the watch as stolen. Subsequent scans of the watch will show an alert about it being stolen.

This means the thief will not be able to sell the watch as any buyer can easily see it is marked as stolen.

Even if the stolen mode is not activated, the thief will not be able to provide a valid ownership certificate. The certificate and watch ID are cryptographically authenticated, there is no way to create new ones.
